What is a Social Media Press Release?
A Social Media Press Release is a press release designed for the online web. In order to be successful in writing for the web, professionals must write in a way that attracts all types of audiences. ”It is also designed with the community nature of the online world in mind so it can be shared and commented on in social bookmarking, microblogging and social networking communities” (http://www.realwire.com/servicesSMNR.asp).
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a SMNR?
Some advantages of a SMNR are information is sent out to the public much faster than other forms of news media. Professionals use more creativity in their writing, which is an advantage because audiences can view these releases at any time and creative writing attracts a wider range of people. Also, by using the internet, professionals can provide links to related stories, photos, and/or videos to give more and better information on each topic.
A disadvantage of a SMNR is that because it is online and so accessible to the public, it can be hard to decipher a real release from a fake one. I have seen many “news releases” that were written by someone not affiliated with what the story was about. Spelling and grammar errors are big clues to determining which stories are fake.
When should a PR practitioner consider using a SMNR?
PR practitioners should use a SMNR anytime they want to release information immediately. An entire release with multiple links and photos can be sent out to the world by just one click. After a big incident, good or bad, it would be a good idea to release something on the web. An example that I remember is when we had to write on the discussion board in class about an airline that had major issues with their planes. The company immediately sent out multiple news releases giving updates on any and all information regarding the airline’s status. Then, on the other side, if a company is in the process of releasing a new product, providing many releases about this product with links that would better inform the consumer would be a good idea. Because of the wide audience reach, social media news releases can be used for almost anything.

This release is about a fundraiser held by Georgia Southern’s Habitat got Humanity chapter. The purpose of this release is to promote the event and ultimately get as many people in the community involved to raise the goal amount of money. The targeted audience is anyone in the community that can swing a sledgehammer. Kids, teens, and parents could all participate and donate to a good cause. The majority of people who usually show up, however, are high school to college aged. Maybe by posting an online news release, more individuals will know about the event and show up.
Tips for SMNR creation
1) Provide hyperlinks to relevant pages.
2) Make the readers aware of the story’s relevance to them in the beginning.
3) Make the release shorter than you would a printed release. Readers need to get the information in the quickest way possible.
4) Write in more of a conversational way. Readers will be more attracted.
5) Speak in a language that a wider range of people can understand. Stay away from big words that only corporate America would understand.
